Child Support Attorney in Galveston County
Personalized Guidance from a Board Certified Family Law Attorney
Child support disputes may involve establishing an initial order, contesting a proposed obligation, responding to changed financial circumstances, or pursuing missed payments. We represent parents seeking support and those challenging an obligation, carefully considering existing court orders, both parents’ finances, and the child’s needs.
Susan M. Edmonson is Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. We evaluate each situation individually and explain whether negotiation, mediation, or court proceedings may provide the appropriate path forward.

A Small Practice with Over Seven Decades of Combined Experience
We take time to understand the facts, explain the available options, and develop a strategy around each client’s goals. Our attorneys draw on more than seven decades of combined legal experience handling Texas family law matters.
Support questions rarely exist in isolation. Paternity, possession, conservatorship, medical support, or dental support may affect the proposed order. We assess these related issues when they are relevant and keep clients informed as the case progresses.
Establishing, Modifying, & Enforcing Child Support Orders
We handle support matters at different stages, from determining the terms of an initial order to addressing an order that no longer reflects current circumstances. The Texas Family Code provides guidelines courts generally use when calculating support, but the appropriate legal position depends on the evidence and facts of each case.
Our child support representation includes:
- Establishing support: Addressing financial information, legal parentage, guideline support, medical and dental support, and the proposed terms of an order.
- Contesting an obligation: Presenting relevant financial facts and responding to disputed support requests.
- Modifying an order: Seeking or opposing a child support modification after circumstances change or applicable Texas review criteria may be satisfied.
- Enforcing an order: Addressing unpaid support or other failures to follow an existing family court order.
Potential enforcement remedies may include wage withholding, contempt proceedings, or other measures authorized by Texas law. The available options depend on the current order, payment history, and procedural posture of the case.
Texas Child Support Review & Court Proceedings
The Texas Attorney General’s Child Support Division can establish, modify, and enforce child, medical, and dental support obligations. Some matters proceed through the Child Support Review Process, an administrative negotiation procedure used to address proposed terms. If the parents don’t agree or the matter isn’t eligible for that process, the dispute may proceed to court.
Private representation gives a parent an attorney who can evaluate that parent’s legal position, provide advice, negotiate proposed terms, and advocate in court when necessary. The Galveston County District Clerk’s Family Section maintains these cases and provides family law court forms and records resources.
An informal agreement between parents doesn’t change the amount required by a court order. Until an authorized process results in a new order, the existing terms generally remain controlling, even if both parents have followed a different arrangement.
Mediation When Possible, Courtroom Advocacy When Necessary
Mediation is a structured negotiation process in which a neutral mediator helps the parties work toward an agreement. We offer in-house family law mediation and seek amicable resolutions when the circumstances allow.
Any proposed agreement may need to address financial support, medical and dental support, and related parenting terms before becoming part of a final order. When the parties can’t agree or litigation is otherwise necessary, our attorneys prepare to present the disputed issues in court.
